Hi guys

Taking a party tomorrow to Hexham and just seen on maps that drop off is in front of the Abbey on Beaumont street as directed by sign at the beginning of the street.

Will 42 long and 8'4 coach squeeze through this part of the street? It looks very, very tight.

Can't take the turn on the right as noticed the lenght restriction sign there but nothing for this point here.

Do all class 1 jobs require a driving assessment and have to put your card in or does that depend on company to company?

You don't need to use a card for an assessment however all the ones I've done have insisted on it. Regards the boss getting the hump just let them know you are looking to move on and will work any notice period, nothing else they can do so long as the assessment doesn't affect the hours you should be available to current employer

if vehicle drive outside yard, then digi card must be inserted. Otherwise it will be flagged as a missing mileage on a tacho machine. Driving for an hour on assessment can be a lot of missing miles. Unless tacho machine is set to a different setting to drive without a digi card.

Castlege a Hgv god so you won’t be teaching him anything he doesn’t already know.
Why don’t we use tachos when we’re learning then and neither do the instructors?

Instruction is different to assessment for the OP and there’s no exemption matters not if they’re paid or not

So I work for a fairly big nationwide company (two consonants and a vowel) tonight we’ve been instructed that we are not allowed to use Satnavs and have had to sign a disclaimer to say that we agree, apparently due to a bridge strike, is this common in any other organizations? seems like a knee jerk reaction to me.

Absolutely never heard a company say that. However given that a lorry sat nav costs less than £100 anyone using a car sat nav in a lorry is an idiot and bridge strikes are always the fault of the driver and never the sat nav.

Exactly - it could happen if you were using a map and also stupid.

9am - 10am driving
10am - 4pm rest
4pm - 5.30 pm driving
5.30pm - 10pm rest 10pm - 1am driving.

Good, as you'd be the one liable. You really need to highlight this to the company as whoever made that shift up should be nowhere near arranging things. Drivers who trust the shifts being allocated to them without checking would be in trouble.

Edit If your vehicle is exempt from EU rules (unlikely) and qualifies to operate under GB domestic rules, then you would be legal, that's something you might want to check before correcting them or refusing to do it.

I’m currently a car transporter and absolutely love the job, currently i do 4 nights out a week and always do 56-60 hours a week but the money isn’t there at the moment. Who genuinely takes home over £1000 a week after tax in the Kent area as tempted to make a change?

your wrong. There are those of us on heavy haulage, fuel etc just about taking over a grand a week paye and getting holiday pay etc, but we are doing 68-72hrs a week.

That’s two weeks in terms of hours not one week. So you are in reality on £500 a week but too dumb to actually realise

Not even allowed to work that many hours a week,

POA is paid hours but does not count as working time toward your total or average allowance...

So 15 hrs x 2 and 3 x 13 = 69 hours in five days plus whatever you do on a Sat morning.. so it's feasible to do 72 hrs easily without even using the 15 hrs as 5 x 13 = 65 and you can easily do 9hrs in the week on POA waiting around.

working hours does not equal paid hours for duty. .

I have been the happy owner of the Garmin dezl LGV810 navigation for a week now. I have been using Dezl 570-LMT for the previous 7 years. The speed of the old device was no longer satisfactory for me, so I switched to a newer model. After a week of use, I noticed a few imperfections, namely: The top bar where the direction of travel and the name of the highway is displayed (in a blue square) incorrectly displays the names of highways. That is, when I was driving to the outskirts of Bristol from Derby on Wednesday, when I left the M5 for the M32, only the M3 was displayed in the blue icon, not the M32. The same situation is when I drive M42, it only displays M4. This is very frustrating. Next thing I was driving to Tonbridge and I was coming off the M20 onto the A228 and I don't know why but the navigation was trying to take me to a road with a maximum height of 14'6 and my truck is 15'3. I received information about the height of the bridge 1 mile before the viaduct. I will attach a...

I know the topic of self employed drivers has been covered a bit but I have a slightly different situation.
All of our drivers are employed but we have a new driver who wants to be self employed as he has been driving a van previously and doesn't want to have to shut his ltd company down as him and his wife both draw a salary from the company and put fuel etc through the company as expenses. I’ve outright said no to him just invoicing us for his work as reading on here and online have seen the TC doesn't like this and HRMC stance on it.
He’s asked could he have a part time contact for 2/3 days a week and then cover the other days if and when we need him. This would give me the power to discipline any infringements correctly and treat him as a normal employed driver.
The only reason I am in this place and haven’t just found a new driver is the bloke is a genuinely nice guy and I do think he deserves the job as is a brilliant worker so I’m trying to find a balance without putting...

Even if you employ him fully on PAYE for the work he does for you, you would need to ensure he fully recorded the hours he does elsewhere. If he works for himself on a Saturday, for example, his weekend rest will be impacted.

Hi, after some advice. Got a Volvo fmx 21plate with a sheet issue. I press the button and it just clicks down by the reset box, checked the fuses and the trip switch and are all fine and I’ve replaced the direction relay but still just clicking? Any ideas?

Tonight’s scenario, you are travelling at 50mph in a average speed camera controlled dual carriageway which is reduced to one lane because of road works, the other lane is used by traffic traveling in the opposite direction. Pc plod come up behind both blues and twos on. You still have 2 miles of this part of the road to cover before it merges back into a dual Carriageway, do you A, speed up to allow plod to get to the incident quicker, bearing in mind he has his sirens going, B stick to the speed limit, if A and you get a ticket for speeding what appeal do you have?

After a bit of advise, the company policy is no mobile phones. There saying the have to be turned off until the shift is over, won't allow us to turn them on at all, if there's an emergency at home our family to contact the office and the office will contact us on our cab phones. My question is can they tell us we can't turn them on whilst on a tacho break, from a legal perspective as I thought we have to be able to freely dispose of our time.

Tbf I wouldn’t work for a company with such policy.....
Why.... because I have been stung before.... The school called one of my old companies to inform me the school was becoming snowed in and child needed collecting (11am) I finished my shift at 1500 to find voicemails and messages from the school to collect my son.... Social Services were called.... All because my boss and the manager receiving the phone call thought i had got someone to call and make an excuse to get out of work! W**kers!!
PS my secondary contact was on holiday that week so there was no other contactable responsible person on the schools behalf

yes I don't blame to leaving a company like that!

honestly it scared me so much that I now choose my place of work based on where I am able to have access to my own comms x

I'd have found out who answered the call. Literally I'd gone in that office and nailed the bastards to the wall - an example would be made and a lesson given.

It is over 3509kg as you thought. The 2.5t only applies going abroad
Staying under 3.5t avoids O licence etc but hugely limits what can be carried
Going to 3501kg or more leaps into I licence (standard not restricted) so need qualified TM, tacho etc.

So self employed drivers!! Ok the TCs don't like them but what if drivers 2 of which I know struggle to hold a position full time due to family commitments (one childcare and the other a ill spouse) so why should they be prevented to work because the traffic commissioner doesn't like it? I find this wholly unfair on the drivers, their families and even one of the haulier companies as they would love to employ one of the drivers full time but can't as the driver has responsibilities towards his family yet they get him as much work as and when they can. If this is fair then what kind of industry are we really promoting.

After all the posts, still can’t see any reason why the drivers can’t be on zero hours contract. It keeps the operator and the driver legit.

Even under the old 5questions by HMRC about being an employee or not would still say they can’t be self employed. It’s nothing new. What’s changing is the way OTC deal with it

No, the Operator (as written on the O Licence / Legal lettering). The ski company is the Contracting Party , but they don't need to be identified on the waybill.

What is the average wage for an HGV 2 driver?
I appreciate this depends on the area but my husband has been offered £11.72 an hour for HGV 2 delivering pallets/multi drop in the area we are moving to, kind of seems low considering the minimum wage should increase to £11 an hour this year.

No body gives any more and no respect or curtesy for other road users, I was going down the m6 the other day and my cruse control was set for 70, two yes two empty ends were in the middle lane doing 65, yes I could of gone past on the inside if its safe to do so but I went to 3rd lane to pass them an back into first while prolonged my indication to hint to them but they had no idea, one of them sped up and sat about 10/15 ft away from me, yes in the middle lane 🤦 you ball bag, why just why ffs don't you know the highway code.

Hi, I'm going around and around in circles with the 28 day record keeping at my company. I understand the 3 only legally accepted records are digital card, digital printout or analogue record. Where there seems to be confusion and where I'm not a 100% as it says b) making a manual record on a record sheet or print out paper.
I understood record sheet was analogue chart but they also have this in annex 3 but I though that was for domestic rules only?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as the company who analyse our tachos say that record sheet is analogue chart only.

May I have your thoughts on this Guys 'n Gals.
Start at the beginning. I did my daily walk round check and I signed it off as ok no issues because I didn't see any etc I then proceeded to go about my day without any problems UNTIL I get basically towards the end of my shift. I then hear a noise which I thought to myself isn't 'normal' and a slight vibration of the steering when turning in one direction. Upon all, I stopped to investigate when it was safe to do so, had a look around but couldn't see anything obviously wrong (I aint no mechanic) I proceeded back to the yard carefully knowing something isn't right and on further inspection by the works mechanic he noticed a number of wheel nuts had become loose, now I know some people may say I should have spotted this but it was pretty hard to see unless you looked real real close and basically as a non mechanic type it was easy to miss (in my opinion) just to add, there are no wheel indicators on this wheel after previously asking for...

I hate wheel nut indicators, seen too many loose wheel nuts on other vehicles and driver say they haven't moved and you can spin to washer freely by hand. Don't know how long you been driving for but the best way in my opinion is, one check for visual dirt/rust marks and then tap them with a little hammer or if you haven't a hammer see if you can move the nut or washer. If you are ever in doubt get the torque wrench out.

Just seen this!! What are people’s thoughts? Mine is that while the initial cause was the car pulling into the Bus lane, the Bus was going far too fast for the conditions!! Just because you’re in a Bus lane doesn’t mean you can go hammering along and you still need to air on the side of caution for this reason!!

How many straps should I use on a curtain sider when strapping pallets down? been told it the last 2 pallets that need strapping and that’s it.

Just to make you aware it's £100 per pallet for not strapping it down right lucky I got fined £100 as I was new to the trucking business but I learnt my lesson if you have xl curtains you can use the internal straps upto 400kg but the back has to be crossed over to stop it going backwards.

The operation ping cameras were on telescopic poles and were on trial for 3 months with highways agency which finished this month. They are foward looking so high in the air and look down into your cab to to check for holding your phone , seat belt and speed too. Assume they will be rolled out up and down the road network soon.

Do these definitely check for speed? The ones on a trailer with no mobile phone sign on? Hearing conflicting things.

Had a few issues lately with drivers using POA, which I believe in the EU satisfies the requirements for rest, and as the tachos are all EU made, they record as rest, however in the UK it does not - so as a consequence when producing infringement letters we are getting infringements for insufficient breaks. Slightly annoying for the driver as the way I see it the tacho isn't performing as it should to the law. Can a tacho centre modify the settings so it doesn't record POA as rest?

Drive it there, if you want to get VAT back do a T1, then pay import duties and VAT, get it registered and then follow through the registration process of a foreign vehicle.
You might need an EU certificate of conformity.

Been having a long running debate with a friend.
I say an 18 year old with a PSV can only drive registered local/workers/school bus services (no longer than 50km) or home to school bus contacts supported by a local authority as they are deamed to be in the spirit of service work.
My friend thinks they can also drive regular contacts such as school swims???

Its been possible to drive a psv at 18 for the last 14 years or so. My sister used to drive at 18. I’m assuming that swimming happens for a school term or so at a time same time & same day of the week for the term so classed as a contract so nothing stopping an 18 year old driving it.

Or aren't they making frequent enough stops?
Sorry but unless you know you have access to a facility to drop it you have to discourage its use. Imho, for the most part, toilets in coaches are unnecessary.

My personal view of toilets on coaches, is, that they are a bio hazard. I have taken a 53 seater coach without a toilet, across to France and Germany a few times, with students. I just made sure that I made comfort breaks within every two hours or so. Never had a problem. When I went with students with a coach that had a toilet, I made sure that teachers understood that the toilet was for emergencies only, and never had a problem. The only time I had problems, was when taking tours with adults, trying to find toilet drops around the UK was difficult at times. On many occasions when loading, passengers would walk out of the hotel on to the coach and go straight to the toilet. So when it the resort I would lock the door and explain that it was out of order because someone has put something down it and blocked it, and I would get it fixed. Then when on the return journey, I would open it again. The times I have had a blocked toilet to clear, especially on Disney’s. (bork, bork) No...

If I were to work 15 hours and assuming I DO NOT hit 4.5 hours drive time, am I only required to have a 45-minute break?

To a point... but there's zero requirement for a full 30 after a 15 minute break already... and there's no clock to reset. Where did you read that?

All that is required is 15 minutes at 6hrs if you intend to carry on and another 15mins or 30 minutes combined. And another 15 mins if you cross 9hrs which must be taken before the end of your shift.
