Any travelling to or from a vehicle not at it's normal operating base is counted as part of your daily duty. So would be included in your working day, regardless of mode of transport. Also if you are available to drive the vehicle you are a passenger on (licence, insured etc.) Then you driver card must be in driver slot 2. Even if you have no intention of driving. If stopped, failure to comply would result in a £300 fixed penalty for driving without card inserted.

Both correct. When you see a Scania V8 on the motorway with all the Kelsa bars and Chrome, it's 20/1 odds on that the driver is being paid peanuts.
He might stab the same per week, or maybe even more in some cases, but that's because he's maxing his hours and getting paid £20a night to sleep in a metal box (that's a VERY cheap security guard, eh?) We get around £35k for a 36:15 week, no nights out. Plenty of overtime available if you want it. Many drivers at my depot do more like £45 to £50k by doing an extra shift. I do my 36:15 over a three day spread, so I could potentially do another two days a week overtime, which would have me at £50k per year, but I prefer the 4 day weekend, to be honest. But that's the great thing about driving HGVs, isn't it? There's a job out there to suit everyone: some people love being on the road all week in a nice unit, and I can respect that - they are the ones doing it 'for the lifestyle'. Our OP has inferred one or other will drive enough to and under domestic rules. Therefore they will be limited to 11hr shift. Sitting in the passenger seat is still duty time. I know an earlier post said otherwise but it is not shown as such in the regs.

As the TM you could / should have some input as to their driving and rests. If you leave it entirely up to the driver how and when they drive/ take breaks, it’s pretty difficult to then criticise them for doing it their way.
What they could have done to maximise or be most effective is irrelevant if you have provided no guidance, and let’s be fair, it seems they made the required drops and at least they kept well within the regs
Regardless of being new or old TM, if you don’t manage them or provide guidance (directly or indirectly) , then is it really continuous and effective management?

Good practice to lift up a bit and drop your air pulling out the trailer, I'd go mad if anyone dropped my trailers without doing it, but I've also got to drop the air on the trailer, saves your legs if it looses air but also helps get the legs off the ground loaded.

Most of our trailer's don't have adjustable air suspension.

Yep, always ease up a bit, once they’ve started the overtake, especially if there’s a queue of traffic behind them. Once they are a safe distance past me flashe them in and up my speed again. For the amount of time it costs it keeps everything moving.

I’ve only had my class 1 for 18 months, and as a car driver used to get pissed off at the overtaking truck, when actually its the one being overtaken, I should've got annoyed with. Hence my answer, no one likes being stuck behind 2 wagons doing 53, it can cause long queues not only that, id much rather not have another truck alongside me for any length of time. Let 'em get on with it and get past.

Sorry Bennetter, but a lot of container transport companies route drivers on home county work which gets them home every night. By the sound of it container work isn’t your cup of tea but it suits lots of people because it’s easy work not physically demanding in any way, over the years I’ve done my share of roping and sheeting, humping groupage and pallets on and off the back of motors, punching back and forward to Spain every week, working a lot loader using chains and toggles, the Essenes of lorry driving is to make life easier for yourself and not harder yes with container work you get a lot of hanging about when loading and unloading, but if your getting paid by the hour what the hardship of watching Tv in the cab or having a Kip or would you sooner be chasing up the motorway. It’s not the bridge and sign you are approaching, it’s the abutting bridge that is lower. There is a bridge exactly like this in West Hendon. The amount of Lorrie’s make it under the approaching bridge, it’s the lower bridge they hit. Approaching from the opposite direction the bridge sign for the height clearance is lower. Crazy.

If you’re now in a TM role, this would be a good time to catch up on all the Stat Docs and not just No6. It is assumed the operator and TM will be conversant with them all regardless of them being mentioned on a cpc course or not. Perhaps go back to your course provider and check

You ONLY need PDP if you have to enter a refinery, you should have been told that during the Tanks module of your ADR. So the only people who are likely to refuse you are fuel tanker companies who do actually run into a refinery. Try applying for non - fuel tanker jobs, or if going for that kind of work, ask if they can arrange the theory and practical training for you - half a day in the classroom, with a test, plus about one full day of practical training, with some other form of testing.

I don't have to prove anything to anyone, but anyone who is/has chased the dollar knows this ain't much. It's ok, but nothing to brag about. Try 60k/year max 60hours per week and home every day. And there are people here (Peterborough) who are making even more. If tramping I would want at least 6k-8k more.

We have LNG trucks and what happens when you run out of gas is a tow truck, 😉 I also see quite often tow trucks coming with LNG units to the gas station. That's quite problematic to gas up again when the tank gets empty as there's a pressure issue. I even get pressure issues after a weekend. On Mondays pressure goes up from around 5-7 bars to 13-15 and requires venting immediately. The tank is like a big thermos, LNG is -160C so the ambient temp being good 180 deg higher warms it up and the pressure goes crazy. There are close to zero LNG stations so every route has to go near one. All I see in these trucks is problems. 🤦 Yes, I know it was about CNG and not LNG but I assume they have similar issues, LNG possibly even worse due to temp difference.

I have had dealings with acas for the same thing with my past job breaching the contract fighting stuff that is pointless because your contract gets amended before it’s sent off to them

I want out of the trade.... I've been a fully qualified carpenter/builder for 28 years and honestly I'm bolloxed.
My body is crippled.... the stress of working for the public is like nothing else, sleepless nights, pressure and worry You rarely get a thanks, getting paid is painful. I've thousands and thousands of pounds spent on tools and vehicles.
You need to be on the ball 24/7 whether that's finding work, working out prices or even just turning up and being able to perfom and problem solve and be creative 100% of the time!
I tell you now a trade in construction is not all that !

Always say to people if you got A4 sheet of paper and wrote yes/no’s expenses etc you wouldn’t bother but human nature takes over with the ups and downs very hard game takes no prisoners but other side, my day wouldn’t of lasted 5 minutes if tried to be 100% legal. Tippers you have to have an angle to survive? Leave rest to your imagination, definitely much harder now. 😡

So It is correct to drop off on the lower level for T2, but they have moved the bay as 13 and 14 are the pick up bays.

You cannot base your price on mileage alone. What if you’re on a drop off and wait job for 6 hours? I have just had to put together a business plan for the bank. They requested an example price for a job and how I will make enough money to run my business. My hourly rate is £25ph (minimum 3 hrs) + £1.75per mile. These rates would vary depending on the individual hire, but the bank were happy enough to give me what I wanted.

Unfortunately, this goes on alot. I went for an interview for a company that does European tour work. They justified paying £100 a day as they pay you for everyday your out on tour, which includes being paid for you day off, and use TIPS as a bonus. Some of the tour guides were highly educated and spoke several different languages. Can't imagine how crap their wages were.

Any European work should still get paid on your off days.. Ski work for example..

As others have said, it's mainly the drivers who get them like it, I drive for Daventry Frozen, and clear away coffee cups and empty food packets daily, also wipe down the tables and work surfaces. The drinks are free, so are the bins!! Plenty blue roll to use if you spill your drink etc.

I agree. You just wonder what their cab and look like. I keep everything clean. The Tesco's RDC in Reading is just as bad. There last week drinks are not free card payments only.

We have free tea and coffee for all drivers, and still it gets abused.
