Hi guy, Great news for PCV holders wishing to do LGV test.
The government have proposed to allow drivers to skip Class 2 and go straight to Class 1 test.
This is how it was done pre 1997, I imagine it will only be until the shortage of LGV drivers is sorted.
This should save you over £1200, my advise is get your medical forms in for LGV provisional and be ready for the change in law.

HGV Driver Shortage
As an ex driver myself who owns a Truckers pub and who has let his CPC lapse, we have been listening to our customers who are overnighting here in Trafford Park, there are many reasons given in these chats as to why so many are fed up, but the one overriding and most frequently mentioned is that of the hated driver CPC, whilst everyone agrees of the importance of refresher training for safety reasons, the biggest gripe is the over commercialization of the training, the cost to drivers and the fact that most periodic training has to be done in their own time, mostly at weekends during rest periods and at their own cost, not only that but many of these so called training experts have never themselves driven a truck or have the faintest idea of what most of the training covers, the EU introduced training has proved to be yet another example of Bureaucracy gone mad to create a tag along industry at the expense of an already over stressed driver.

Well done to the ‘professional’ drivers who were stuck in the queue on the M1 South near Trowell services jct25ish who just ignored a broken down car in lane 3 because the queue had cleared and they wanted to crack on. I was the Royal Mail driver who got out and pushed him over to the hard shoulder along with a guy in a car who came to help me. Yes we’d all be stuck there half hour but what’s the harm in another couple of mins to get the car out of the way quicker to make the road safer for everyone.
PS there were dragons 🐉 and s*** 😆
Life is short… sometimes we all need a hand so be kind… It won’t kill you.

What is the current cost of doing PCV training privately with CPC?
I passed my PCV privately in the 2000s before CPC was required. All I needed was my medical certificate and passed my theory test and practical test. In 2007 it cost me £700 in total including coach driving lessons.
What is the cost now and process drivers need to go through to get their PCV licence with CPC if they do it privately?
OR can they do just the theory test and practical test then take their CPC when they get employment as a coach driver as I did in 2007?

this is with the likes of 2 major companies who tour the UK with Americans Australians etc

I still wouldn’t accept that personally. I have worked for tour companies who even mention the tips expected for guides and drivers in their documentation to guests, but I always make sure to tell the guests that the driver and he guide get the same amount. I would not accept a bigger tip than the driver.

Not sure if anyone can help me here. So, I managed to get a class one position, which I had been in for 5 weeks. Now, my reversing is a bit dodgy, being new and everything, but, I've managed to get by with no mishaps, until Thursday. I caught a trailer when trying to reverse between two of them in the yard and caught the curtain. There was damage, but, nothing major. I immediately told management, who's first words to me were oh for f**k sake. I was on holiday on Friday, and today. But, received a phone call telling me that they were letting me go because 'maybe Class 1 work wasn't for me, and maybe I should stick to rigids' where on earth do I stand here? Was everyone else's reverse manoeuvres perfect within 5 weeks?

Bet this is a real old post and from elsewhere but here goes.
If the driver is working without a contract, it’s usually for one reason only - financial benefit. Alas, without a contract, the “employer” can deduct what they like as there is no contract to say otherwise.
That’s one of the joys of not being under contract.

Hi! I'm new to this forum. I recently joined because I’m looking for some help with regulations in regards to working in Europe.
I’m currently a owner driver of a 3.5T 2019 Mercedes Luton box and have managed to find a company willing to give me regular work from UK - France - Switzerland - UK.
I’ve been told by a few people that I will need an operations license for this?
I have no idea where to start with that and also is that all I need other than European break down cover and European insurance etc?

Yes tacho will be needed in 2026, but not today for those under 3.5t and those over 3.5t the rules haven’t changed - tacho always was needed.
The quoted page only relates to O licence, and only need a TM for Standard International and not for Restricted.

Just a warning, I called into Cobham Services this morning with passengers on I took my paperwork in to sign in with the cleaner who told me he needed to see my passengers and wasn’t interested in the paperwork. Once he signed me in he told me the management are checking CCTV to make sure drivers without passengers are not having the vouchers.

So I lost my job today because of infringements for not taking my breaks for long enough. Thing is I know I have had my breaks. 1x15min (18min) within 4 hours of shift and another 30mins (33min) when my driving time gets to about 3.5 hours I switch it to “bed” so I know the tacho is working right.

It’s my first class 2 job driving using a tacho. I’m absolutely gutted. All my manager said was I should know how to use a tacho when I did my test, which is absolutely wrong because it isn’t something you get taught.

How on earth do I learn how to use a tacho properly?

I can drive a truck no problem. Just computer says no. 😢

This is a industry wide problem when it comes down to new drivers. The CPC course dose not go into the operation of the tachograph enough infact it doesn't explain anything about how to put anything into practice with the Tacho Head. New drivers turn up to there first job and it's not long before the problems start to occur regarding the tachograph. Granted most companies will train you or will have some sort of training in place for new drivers but never the less there is no prior training available for new drivers regarding Tachograph Operation. I was left to learn it all my self and I myself had my fair share of infringements. You would think by now the CPC would cover this to some degree but it doesn't.

Morning all.
This is similar to a load I was faced with yesterday (ignore that it is strapped) I believe what I did was correct but I was told that as it is an XL trailer, it's good to go without any securing. A discussion was had and I just want to see how others deal with this? There were no straps supplied or available
Just to add there was around a foot to the edge on each side, 24 pallets of bricks.

Always strap that load regardless of weight bearing curtains especially with them being bricks not worth it anything else not a problem but they are heavy and extra security is always best to be on the safe side.

Having a nightmare just failed case study exam with logistics UK for 2nd time after waiting over 9 weeks for results, anyone got any good advice? Resit is in 4 weeks but unsure if I should wait until March as just unsure what I’m doing wrong, any help is much appreciated

And bingo he had thousands of practice questions. He fully focused on the multiple choice exam just kept practicing and he passed first time. And his speaking and writing English wasn't too good aswell.
He obviously failed the case study.

that’s one I had not heard of. Obviously if you want and feel you can afford it go ahead.

I just went on and found over 12 years worth of past papers, case study, so I don't know where you lot are looking, so I've posted the link, have fun on them

But with the Multiple choice exam, its a different ball game with OCR. It might be very different with other exam boards etc. Think each training provider has their own scheme and teaching methods these day's.

Any operator who cannot pay a decent livable wage to his or hers drivers shouldn't be an operator. When drivers are earning less than 10quid an hour because there is something wrong. To drive a coach a driver should be on at least 15quid an hour.

I feel as an tour Driver for 23 years in UK and Europe there are arguments for companies and Drivers. Unfortunately the industry became like a Ryanair, easy jet system cheap coach travel. With being made redundant by shearings run by American corporation Lone star. The holidays were far to cheap instead of undercutting set a price across the board for holidays. The days of tips are going as people say they get there wages. So to put this Into a fairer system coach companies won't pay £16 an hour but £9.50 an hour is no incentive for responsibility. If companies would give a no charge full day optional for drivers that at least would encourage tour drivers. Otherwise industry will just have steering wheel attendants.

1 Major company owner from new this truck wants for nothing and is 100% mechanically perfect with Long mot Plate until 31st September 2024 with no advisories and has been on 6 weekly inspections which has just been done and serviced on the Volvo gold warranty scheme from new with only Genuine Volvo parts used it is literally ready to jump in and go straight to work! 12 Tonner from new not been messed with! 320000 miles which is barely worn in for these 7.1 litre engines! Tyres like new allround! Curtains in good order! Day cab. All in just a good honest solid lorry that must be seen to fully appreciate! 2 keys Full bookpack full history Full v5 all present. You would have to travel far and wide to find another as good as this and even then I still don't think it will match it!
