Good afternoon. Standard coach driver question. What sat nav is best suited for coaches? Currently got a Garmin Dezl 9700 but, I'm finding no matter how many times you try to avoid tight unsuitable roads it still wants to take you around there because it’s the quickest way. Not what I paid £300+ for. Are Navpal any good? Tia

Tom Tom truck expert - the 6” screen is hugely better to see, great for bridges and max weight limits, program the max weight limit in to avoid narrow country lanes etc.

Also use google maps to fine tune areas I’m not familiar with and to see where I need to reverse etc for pick ups

I use the sygic app. The dedicated devices are not so great with traffic info. The app you pay 30-50 quid and its yours forever. Tom tom want 50 a year for their app

We used Snooper truck mate but it would avoid roads for HGV that we can use; we use TomTom pro now and it’s so much better.

I personally using the tom tom go app on my phone.. now its never sent me wrong yet but I will say it does run off phone data so if you don't have signal then it won't update until you have it so you will have to do it the old fashioned way.. always keep a map hand. that's the only downside I'd say.

How would some of the DVRs cope back when I started to drive coaches in 1979,we had no sat navs, only maps to guide us UK, European to get anywhere you used road signs in Europe you had road signs of towns stating Nord, est, sud, to help you, to find where to go, in UK if doing nx work and you didn't know where the coach station was you used to ask a pax if they knew where the coach station was to guide you in,

if in Europe ask a taxi driver and they will tell you, and then follow them, so called DVRs haven't a clue without a sat nav, or to carry a good set of maps, you have it so easy now coaches with a/c, galleys, auto gearboxes etc, my day manual box, no a/c I could go on, as a final thought what will you do when sat nav packs up

Well that is the problem, people rely too much on their sat navs itake your point on cameras, but road signs are there for a reason what would you do if your sat nav packs up

passed my test in 70s, no sat navs only good old atlases. Before a journey or tour check the maps, make notes on sticky pads and if you did it properly jobs done.
