Hello I'm having doubts that maybe, I'm not confident in being a successful bus driver. I love driving sure and I love passengers and I love the environment. But I've tried to get my head round how to physically be a bus driver, I'm not sure I can. Any advice please.

Once you start you will get the hang of it its like driving a car except its a longer vehicle and just need bit more space for turning just take your time and it will come to you

Believe me, the fear of being stuck somewhere that you can't turn around never leaves you. I have been oh so close with mini buses, full size buses, and even 50ft coaches. I remember once going into Derby. We always went in one way with our coach, but there was a bus lane that went on ahead. I concluded that had to go to the bus station, so I asked a driver once if it was straight forward. He assured me that it was.

When we realized what I had done, we just fell about laughing and got on with it. That was on Nat Ex so there is a lot of flexibility on where you go.

The real nightmare is on stage carriage, because it doesn't matter what route you are on, what time it is, or where you are, at the ultimate moment of f**k up, another bus will turn up with a driver to both laugh at you, and to tell everyone at the depot.

Best thing to do is pretend there is nothing else on the road, and you have the right of way of everything, in other words don't give a f**k, your bigger your right of way, keep that mentality you will be ok, 25yrs experience

It will come, you will learn the routes in time, the ticket machine will be second nature soon enough and as said, it just clicks one day. Take your time, don't try to rush yourself as that's when mistakes will happen. Double check what ticket they have asked for (I still do this, trust me, you will be asked some weird arse stuff for a ticket - like a single return, or such beauties like that).

Before you get to any stop just check your dashboard or bus stopping light if it's visible from the cab for any illumination, and check it again because they won't always press the bell and claim they have. And don't expect people on bus stops to 1) want the bus you are driving even if it's the only bus that uses that route and 2) stick their hands out for the bus in time.

Stay slim make sure you fit behind the wheel that's a start. Don't listen to negativity in the workplace just be you
