What is the current cost of doing PCV training privately with CPC? What is the cost now and process drivers need to

Post by SIMONEN »

What is the current cost of doing PCV training privately with CPC?
I passed my PCV privately in the 2000s before CPC was required. All I needed was my medical certificate and passed my theory test and practical test. In 2007 it cost me £700 in total including coach driving lessons.
What is the cost now and process drivers need to go through to get their PCV licence with CPC if they do it privately?
OR can they do just the theory test and practical test then take their CPC when they get employment as a coach driver as I did in 2007?

Passed my test in 1974. Used a company vehicle, tests were free, no test centres, just turn up at an agreed point to meet the examiner and off we went. 45 minutes later - issued with a pass certificate!!

Some of the answers here just really hammer home the stupidity of drivers.

If you passed your PCV test in the 2000’s why do you need to re take your test. You haven’t stated your age, but I’m guessing it’s no longer on your licence?? Is this right. If it’s been taken off your licence it won’t be due to CPC it will be to do with not having your medical at 45/50/55/60yrs old to keep your licence updated.
If this seems to be correct to you what I’m guessing, you should be able to take your PCv medical and then have your PCV put back on your licence by the DVLA without taking any tests.
Then you can take your CPC courses for a cost of around £250.

Im in my 40s and I don’t need to retake my test. I’m just curious as to how much it costs now that CPC is required and if new drivers can just do the standard theory and practical tests and get a licence as I did and then do the CPC at a later day to get the driver qualification card.

Hi Simonen, I also did the same as you in 2007, my total cost was £900 pounds.
This was with CCT in Stanbridge beds.
I am still doing part time at 73..

Assuming one already has a full B licence, start with a medical / eyesight test to apply for a provisional D licence. Then
2 part CPC theory test, involving theory, hazard perception and case studies.
Driving test, followed by a practical demonstration test.
If you pass the 4 parts of the test, you get your Driver qualification card and can drive professionally.
Cost including driving lessons, between £1500 and £2000

for those who don’t want to drive a bus professionally do they still have to do a CPC as part of their tests before getting awarded their PCV licence?
I know people take HGV tests so they can drive big motorhomes and horse lorries and they don’t need to do any CPC just have a medical and the basic theory and practical test to get a licence.

to drive a bus on a non professional, you won't have to do Part 2, the case studies or Part 4, the practical demonstration of the Driver CPC, nor will you have to undergo periodic training every 5 years

Thanks. So if a few years later they decide to drive professionally can they do the CPC at their own expense (if necessary) when they get a coach driving job?

Yes. But they would still have to pass the initial module 2 & 4 tests to gain the first DCPC card. Not the 7hr periodic training sessions.

so that would mean arranging and booking the 2 & 4 tests with the Driving standards agency at a government test centre like where the practical test was taken?

Module 2 can only be taken at a DVSA test center and would have to be booked direct through DVSA. Module 4 can be done at a training company if they have their own in house examiner. 👍

I have heard that it can be a bit cheaper if you do the lessons and test in Northern Ireland. You need a provisional licence a medical and a tacho card. You can learn most of the theory stuff from books and on line.

All that stuff is surely a legacy of Brussels bull**** that UK was supposed to be simplifying and perhaps dumping. It' s just part of the pen-pushers money-go-round and nothing to do with safe driving.
