Coach defect pop quiz anyone? Would you drive on this with a 400 mile day planned? (that included driving on farmers tracks & fields - not that I think that would make a difference)

No chance. That's a car wheel and would look stupid on a coach 😂 but seriously, a tyre in that condition is only going to one place, the tyre fitters.

Looks like it's through to the cord rather than superficial so would say no.

Rather than ask the self-proclaimed experts, call the fitter / traffic office, or if you can't do that refer to Section 8 of the PSV inspection manual (readily available online) which will tell you what you need to know;

What others think is irrelevant. The information you need is available online.

And thank you all for confirming and backing up my decision and reasons for my decision.

Traffic office sometimes still would send the vehicle just to make it run. It's a no go, cut it too long and too deep to be safe.

It's never has and never will be the Traffic Office's decision to run it or not.

no one took your condescending nature though. Fingers are just fine. Page to help not belittle and I'm sure everyone agrees with the comment the guy was only asking a question not expecting to be told off because of your years and years or experience. Away back to school and learn some manners.

For those of you with the stupid comments, obviously I got it checked and I made my decision before posting this, and stand by it. Asking out of curiosity and maybe a little bit of a confirmation that I made the right decision. For clarity, there is no cord showing, and 2 different coach mechanics deemed it legal, however both said they would still change it before sending it out.

I wouldn't drive on that personally, may be legal but would have weakened the tyre increasing the likelihood of a blowout.

If you think you’re doing the company a favour by driving it like that you’re not. That’s a pg9 and a visit to the traffic commissioner if cord is showing. Not to mention enough points on the operators OCRS score to likely take them to red.

I’m confident in my ability to assess a tyres safety. As I stated above, I made my decision and took necessary steps before posting. I just wanted to make sure I had some evidenced support from fellow drivers should I have needed it.
Also, it might help a new driver to see an example like this and how to handle it, which might help them in the future.

I really hope as a new driver they would really not use as the cpc still fresh!

It has damage so its integrity (and the companies) has gone. Remember it’s your licence. If they force you to drive on it I’d be saying see ya

It's illegal.
It doesn't matter what your fitter says.
If VOSA stop you, you will be our of pocket and possibly lose your licence.
As for the Company, they may lose their licence to trade.
Refuse point blank to drive it.

I would 1000% not even get that coach into gear with my card in it shame on any operator sending a motor out in that poor condition it's an absolute nightmare accident waiting to happen especially in this heat 🥵.

No way, I wouldn’t risk it my life, my passengers & other road users, mechanic is not responsible for anything happens on the road, not even the owner, your boss, your mum or even a God , at the end of the day , You as a driver taking all risk on your shoulders !
Massive No from me & for me You’ve made a right decision, well done mate 👏
