The very best advice I can give you is stay with a good company guaranteed weekly wage no overhead costs no worries, I've seen drivers buy a 2nd hand rig and a trailer think big going to be the next Nolan's or McBurney etc and after 18 months being flat broke

Break it down for you. Unit high milage 700km 18k fridge trailer with years mot 13k then have and extra 10k put to one side for tyres maintenance etc.
So far your out of pocket by 41k the today's fuel prices roughly 400 a day Monday to Friday so the fuel cost for 90 days 3 months before you get paid for the work you've done for the first month is 32k so the total your out of pocket without is a total of 73k before you even get a wage for the work you've done. Now ask yourself is it worth doing

Doesn't worth doing it, especially now, unless you can get a decent contract...better invest into a fast food or buy a Skoda Superb and add a Milf taxi sticker on it😁.

I can give you a tip on how to be a owner driver running 2 or 3 trucks doing containers and have a million pounds in your bank account within 12 months You start off by having two million in bank account. To be honest get a transit first and fill your spare time doing casual HGV driving just to get on your feet but it will be very long hours to get what you want When the economy picks up some quarry companies offer franchise schemes. Some of the big hauliers started out with a transit van. Good luck

he could go machine dri I g on build sites, £850-900 per week, 5 days, 8-9 hours a day. Be home for tea every night, why bother.
It seems to be a lot of foreigners coming to the uk thinking they can make a killing, truth known, they Will probably work for less and be happy with it, sod that.

Your call, but I wouldn’t at the moment, many units going up for sale, limited companies going up for sale. Unless you have guaranteed direct work, and by that I mean with a supplier or manufacturer, and not a Subby into another transport company. Or you can do specialist work. Rates are falling and have been for sometime. Bad time to be starting up now.
I started in 2019 prior to the pandemic, no idea what was coming. Only thing that’s got me through is flexibility, specialty, a phone book built over 25yrs in business, and experience in many aspects of the industry

Think on this my trucks are paid for and they are sorted and parked up as I refuse to pay stupid rates for drivers while being offered 1.35 a mile for traction any fool can run a truck in to the ground for nothing just wait maybe six months till all the fools have gone under and nobody prepared to run for nothing and there will be more work for sensible hauliers just wait don't run at a loss ???

Don't be a twot, just stay as a driver for somebody else you will be far better off without the stress and worry and hassle

thanking you all for the wonderful responses. I am so glad to be in this forum seeing your willingness to help, advice and point me into the right direction.
I have read all your comments and I think I will do the TM CPC first to understand the market's terrain and thereafter make a better decision from wealth of knowledge as an insider.
Or get ADR course done with Petroleum Driver Passport to get a better wage as Tanker driver.

Its tough out there. I did for a year and stopped last year October. I used to pull Maritime trailers moving containers from Felixstowe port to England and Wales. Plenty of work but the rates aren't that good. The running cost make it difficult too. You just earn as well paid driver, thats all. It might be wiser to get a good job instead of putting your capital and get the headache of running business.

Alot depends on why you want to do it, if it's for money then I wouldn't bother as it's very unlikely you will have the same earnings as many employed driving jobs. If you do decide to go ahead then it would be worth a call to lkw walter, they pay within days of receiving signed cmr, there's other companies too such as Barron Wood who also pay within 3 weeks.
