How have any of you gents or ladies gone about tramping when you have kids at school and the other half works

Post by Jurassu »

I said tramping but I mean it is nights out. Could be upto 4 nights or it could be none. All planned a week in advance
How have any of you gents or ladies gone about tramping when you have kids at school and the other half works full time too?
Do you
A. Don’t take a new job that involves nights out
B. Tell the other half tough 💩the monkeys too good to turn down
C. Make it work
Never thought I’d even consider nights out since the kids come first but I really want the job and the money is a lot more than I’m on now and there’s no weekend work just some nights out planned a week in advance

Ok.. in a similar position.. family first .. can always get another job… money isn’t everything and can only spend what you earn… my mrs works full time her job isn’t a 9-5 and works in the nhs .. so one of us has to be at home for the kids… not just that both my kids go karate so if they kick off with each other it’s literally that.. sometimes we’re not parents but referees.. I do do nights out but pre arrange them for when I can..

I’ve got 6 yr old twin girls so I hear you about being a referee 😂😂😂 the only day I might be a let down is a Tuesday night picking them up from child minders. Friday is the other day I pick them up and I’m pretty sure I’d be back for that. It’s not mom-fri tramping but depends where your sent so could end up being home a few nights some weeks

told them in the interview I do everything around my kids. They seem like a nice company to work for. Only one way to find out I guess

Money isn’t everything. Been a tramper best part of 18 yrs until my daughter came along. Switch to day/night work.
Took a tramping job at start of the year on tidy money but was harder now then it ever was due to family. Took huge pay cut and back on nights and a lot happier for it.
No pay rise will bring back the times you’ll miss out on.

I tramp 4 on 4 off and that works for us… I did mon-fri tramping and i hated it!could t wait to get a new job.
Money isn’t everything… it helps don’t get me wrong but I’d rather my kids know who I am rather than a few extra shekels in me bin

Buddy...my personal opinion is ...don't do it...there is work...don't rush ... your family is "ok" they have money not their daddy, and you don't have a life... nothing in the world...every now and then is understandable...but if you have planned in advance every week 3,4 nights in the truck...it is tramping...

it’s not necessarily every night. Could be upto 4 nights or it could be local. They work all round the country so could be 200 miles away or it could be around the local area.

someone say in a comment that divorce is much more expensive...it depends...every now and then...nobody will die...but if it's as i say 3,4 nights out regularly...it is called trumping...in my area Midlands...you get around 500 more a month for sleeping in the truck... your peaceful sleep is worth more than that...i can promise you that

I’m in the midlands too mate. Unless I get the phone call to say I’m being considered for the position I’ll never know 🤷‍♂️ I wasn’t even that keen before the interview but after about 40 minutes I would like to work for them. I’ve been on low wages all my working life and it’s hard not to go for it. Worst case is I find another job if I don’t like it. There’s no weekend work.

me personally would try agency...now is the perfect time...they need drivers to cover the summer holidays for full timers... you can make decent money and work whenever you can...the minimum rates on the agency is 16, 17 P/H...2,3 good days and you are sorted ...trust me... Just be honest, have a good work ethic and don't consider yourself the center of the world now that you are a driver...be respectful and serious...don't miss shifts and don't cancel without a real emergency... hangover is not an emergency...and you will always have work...they need drivers not ...managers driving trucks...like some drivers think they are

I know mate thanks. I like stability and routine. I’d only do agency if I didn’t have a contracted full time job

I work away all week. I have missed all my kids school plays I have missed birthdays I have missed so many things. My family love it when I’m home but it will play on your mind mate. Money isn’t everything. I have been making that mistake I think.

Working nights HGV is not to be underestimated, your concentration has to double, it really takes its toll on you, the strain of not falling asleep at the wheel is hard going sometimes

I drive through Europe, sometimes I'm away for upto three weeks. I've got a three year old son, and I've missed so much, but I wouldn't change anything. My missus is very understanding and knows that I love my job. Only got a few years left.

full tramping probably isn’t for me but some nights out and some nights at home for the right money I’m up for. They don’t work weekends ever so I’m up for it. The moneys more than I’ve ever had so I hope I get a call from them and give it a go

you won't know until you try it. With modern technology we can always be in touch, unlike many years ago when you had to find a payphone and hope they were in.
I was weekended in Germany when my mother passed away. The boss couldn't have done any more for me, flew me home and flew another driver out to take over the run.

exactly. FaceTime every night I’m out. Weekends can be fun because I’ll have a lot more money to do things. Bills have to be paid. I’m not skint now but it’s getting harder
