I quite often will have a 15min very early into my shift. Saves me sitting for full 45min afterwards 😂 actually doing that now, and only been on duty for 20min with 5min driving.
As soon as there is 1min of work or driving done, you can have a break. One place I worked had a run that took 4:25min to complete. Plus time to get a trailer etc. which usually used to take around 10min. So I always used to get my trailer, checks etc. then 45min break, and then set off with enough time to get to my delivery in one go.

For it to count for the WTD you just need to register 1 minute of working time, either driving or other work, for it to count as the 1st part of a split driving break you just need to register at least 1 minute of driving.

there’s a huge amount of that. I’m a CPC trainer, but I was a driver long before that, I hate sitting in CPC courses where the trainer doesn’t know anywhere near as much as they should. Not all CPC courses are created equal!

I must admit, when it first came in I was not a happy bunny, I had 15 under my belt at that time. Felt like bit of a slap in the face.
But I think it largely depends on the trainer as well as the course being undertaken.

You can have a break after 1 minute of working or driving if you wish.
If you have a break after 1 min of work, but you've yet to register any driving, it won't count as a 15 for Drivers Hours purposes but it will count towards WTD breaks.

Some good comments on here, some not so good!
For a driving break, make sure you’ve recorded some driving, for a WT break, make sure you’ve recorded some WT. which is what most people have said.
When it comes to “take them whenever you like” you may want to check company policy first.
Your company CAN tell you when and where to take your break, you are after all in their vehicle and they are paying you. What they CAN’T do, is ask you to break the law (go over your WT or driving time, use break when working etc). I’ve never worked for a company that told me when and where, but they do exist.

Yes you can I’d do vehicle checks time whatever your company policy is on that I have to show 15 then do at least one minute drive as I was told when I first started the wheels 🛞 need to move before the head resets the drive time.

Yes, but if you want it to count towards driving time break you have to have a minimum of a minute of drive time showing, otherwise it’ll only come off your wtd

If you have a break before you've done enough drive time to register the 2 mins on the tacho, it will only count as a WTD break and not a drive time break.
