On the old analogue because there was no way of plugging into head unit to see what’s been happening while card wasn’t in I knew of some companies being told to leave their charts in head on break so it could record any movement so I don’t get why all of a sudden it’s become an offence although I appreciate you are now able to extract this particular info out of the head

It’s not an offence to leave in or remove, that’s drivers choice. That is my point though the instructor said you MUST take it out which is incorrect.Frankho wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 4:37 pm On the old analogue because there was no way of plugging into head unit to see what’s been happening while card wasn’t in I knew of some companies being told to leave their charts in head on break so it could record any movement so I don’t get why all of a sudden it’s become an offence although I appreciate you are now able to extract this particular info out of the head

I agree with you either way it records the same movement or non movement whether it’s in or out and data can be extracted out of digital head unitsNigeloomi wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 4:38 pmIt’s not an offence to leave in or remove, that’s drivers choice. I only remove mine if I am on a 45 over a weekend. Been tramping Europe for over 9 years now and having been subjected to controls from the Swiss & Austrian police and the infamous German BAG on many occasions I have never received a fine for a tachograph infringement. So called instructors love to play the biggun.

Maybe I’m right, maybe I’m wrong but it could be something to do with the old school regarding taking your card out every night. Remember years ago when we had to remove our tacho cards at the end of every shift as an overprint was regarded as an offence. Just a thought.

If DVSA officials have different opinions how can an instructor know the answer it’s how you interpret the guidelines

Think it’s just preferred ways of doing it from one driver to the next either way is good from how I understand it

Why wouldn’t you just sit there and get it over with - people that pipe up drag out the day and make it longer for everyone
If you know your tight then just keep stum and get that boring day over with

I teach cpc and tell the guys it's advisable to remove it at the end of a shift for a few reasons. Main one being - if I decide to touch the keys for whatever reason before my times up it switches the tacho to other work in some vehicles and you might not even know. If you know your vehicle and know it won't change on you then it makes no odds. Saves you doing any manual entries as the tacho knows what day it is. Different if your running with paper tacho as that's a 24clock and you can't overlap. I used to leave my card in when I took the keys home with me. Soon as I started put on other work then start my checks. Do what works for you.
