I was taught a simple reverse technique. They put flags on the trailer to help with distance to the end barrier. I passed and cannot reverse to save my life. That’s the only thing holding me back doing class 1. Driving her is no problem as I failed first time and had extra lessons.

I was driving a class 2, and driver in class 1, couldn’t get on a bay for love nor money, and big yard was empty. After waiting a while, I offered to put it on the bay for him. He thanked me, and I told him how to line up his trailer the next time with the white line as a guide. I know it’s not rocket science, and we sometimes panic. He had passed 6 months earlier.

I do have my class 1 and the staff were needing to get his trailer tipped, so for quickness I put it on the bay for him. Was a TNT lorry, and I worked for them for 8 years previously. So I think reversing should be a big part of driver training and test, but you learn as you go, to different places and some are horrendous as a few make it as tight as possible by storing pallets etc, in which should be your safe reversing area.
