We have a formula on Excel that takes into account of all running costs per mile just tap the mileage in and hourly rate it's spits out the job price
Re: Hi good evening I’m looking for sensible answers, I’m asking how do people quote for jobs as in price per mile???
Estimate for an artic now about £700 a day £2.75 each and every mile
Re: Hi good evening I’m looking for sensible answers, I’m asking how do people quote for jobs as in price per mile???
£3.00 per mile is about right
Re: Hi good evening I’m looking for sensible answers, I’m asking how do people quote for jobs as in price per mile???
To be fair in 30 odd years I've never known our cost prices be so volatile fuel , driver's wages , adblue , and new truck costs seem to go up every week ,I genuinely have trouble remembering it all when I price up work nowadays , adblue has doubled in. Cost the last two months
Re: Hi good evening I’m looking for sensible answers, I’m asking how do people quote for jobs as in price per mile???
Only you can work out your costs, they are all so variable..:
Vehicle daily cost
Trailer daily cost
Driver cost
Fuel cost per mpg
Plus contingency fund for tyre repairs/vehicle breakdowns
Then when you have those you can work out a cost per mile. Then add on your margin what you are happy with.
Bearing in mind most transport companies only make a few % margin.

i agree i am sure we all have different insurance costs. I started in late 1981 went bust early 1982 because i didn't know what i was doing. Started again in 1984 with a better brainCamland wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 5:34 pm Only you can work out your costs, they are all so variable..:

Its all good sayin it should be this or that but they are plenty of people working for peanuts, not got much of a chance really but yeah should be at least £2.80 -£3.00 min over 150 mile say more for less miles / hours

I would say not, the pplm rates you see quoted for different vehicle sizes are about right for a 100 mile job imo.
Jobs below 100 miles are priced more on time and with a minimum charge for really short jobs.

I agree, but there is also a going rate which you won't get much/any work if you quote above. I wish I could name my price but sadly not.andrta wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 5:43 pmeveryones cost determines what they can charge

weekly earnings should be 3 times your cost for fuel

Thanks everyone so far, I’ve just started up and looking at jobs via haulage exchange and they ask us to quote for jobs, I just need to know how to price up and be fair and also not to under cut the majority of us - Like some people say that some people work for peanuts and that must affect the rest of us who are trying to keep the value of us upto date.
I want to be fair but also not drive us down hill in the market.
I only have one unit and one trailer so far. So I want the best for us all to achieve what we are worth these days as in 2022.
Thanks again to all

I’ve dealt with haulage exchange for many years mate, I post a lot of jobs on there but never really take any, the rates are ridiculous, some are literal pence per mile, obviously using as “backload” rate.JoshipJole wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 5:48 pm Thanks everyone so far, I’ve just started up and looking at jobs via haulage exchange and they ask us to quote for jobs, I just need to know how to price up and be fair and also not to under cut the majority of us - Like some people say that some people work for peanuts and that must affect the rest of us who are trying to keep the value of us upto date.

My tip to actually make a living is find outbound loads from companies local to you, carry their product, then find a load to get you back.

Thanks for your comment mate. Backload rate… how do they calculate that exactly?Camland wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 5:49 pmI’ve dealt with haulage exchange for many years mate, I post a lot of jobs on there but never really take any, the rates are ridiculous, some are literal pence per mile, obviously using as “backload” rate.JoshipJole wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 5:48 pm Thanks everyone so far, I’ve just started up and looking at jobs via haulage exchange and they ask us to quote for jobs, I just need to know how to price up and be fair and also not to under cut the majority of us - Like some people say that some people work for peanuts and that must affect the rest of us who are trying to keep the value of us upto date.

It’s what’s killed the industry, if everyone held out for decent money we’d all make a good profit.

what size vehicle is that for? I'm on the Courier Exchange and 200 mile LWB van jobs go for about 90 to 95p per loaded mile.Camland wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 5:50 pmjust to cover your fuel for the day, one example 200 miles for £200!JoshipJole wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 5:50 pmThanks for your comment mate. Haha Sooty mobile, my dream van that! Prices aren't what they were I gather, I've only been on there 2 years.JoshipJole wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 5:48 pm Thanks everyone so far, I’ve just started up and looking at jobs via haulage exchange and they ask us to quote for jobs, I just need to know how to price up and be fair and also not to under cut the majority of us - Like some people say that some people work for peanuts and that must affect the rest of us who are trying to keep the value of us upto date.

I'm thinking of doing my truck licenses, but like being an owner driver.
Re: Hi good evening I’m looking for sensible answers, I’m asking how do people quote for jobs as in price per mile???
I’m in same boat as the author of this site we’re going with haulage exchange Monday ourselves we don’t want to be under cutting either we’re all here to make a living and the large companies take the biggest slice of the pie one of the reasons why they’ve been battering the government over driver shortages so they can bring the driver rate back down to increase their profit margins but the small companies need to make a living on what’s left
Re: Hi good evening I’m looking for sensible answers, I’m asking how do people quote for jobs as in price per mile???
I work on minimum of £350 a day profit on a truck, after diesel/Adblue/driver wages/road toll/trailer hire if needed etc

got a yard full of trucks, trailers, tractors and plant machinesMarekalimo wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 6:02 pmI would say that’s not bad at all.
Are you run single truck?
What hours you roughly work?
We will only do a job if it’s worth doing, never do a return load and always run back home empty, I don’t mind if the lorry’s don’t go out all month,, on working hours this time of the year we are always locking the gates at 4pm and start as early as needed to get the job done and get back before 4pm

If you don't what you should be charging should you be operating

You need to be in the position where you are telling the customer the rates, not the customer telling you,.at the moment if your I'm that position your much better off in a job
