Depends if you want much grip. Volvo midlift will grip better
Re: Thoughts on 6x2 Scania HI Line tractor for container work pls. Ty.
I have no problem with Scania. I
Have 2 Volvo artic 1 Daf. The midlift grips ok for a midlift. (The other are double drive and rear lift) I had a Scania one hire. Didn’t grip half as good as the Volvo. Volvo is cheaper but when you want to sell the Scania will sell easy
Re: Thoughts on 6x2 Scania HI Line tractor for container work pls. Ty.
Also they have 12 mths driveline warranty from this place.gavinfoun wrote: ↑Mon May 09, 2022 8:05 amI have no problem with Scania. I

Never had a problem with Mercedes. Trucks are very much a matter of taste though.
Re: Thoughts on 6x2 Scania HI Line tractor for container work pls. Ty.
DAF far cheaper to run per mile and a lot cheaper to by than a Scania

Ok, first of all 6x2 Scania high line doesn't say much.
- How many horsepower?
- What year?
- Whats the milage?
- What was is used for?
- Tag or midlift?
- Overall condition?
- Condition of tyres (each costs £320+ and on drive axle you need to change all 4 in one go as the lower thread will eat away the new tyre)
- Opticruise (2 or 3 pedal one) or manual?
- What has been changed from wear and tear parts (clutch, brake pads, hubs, etc)
- DPF filter (if needs replacing you are looking at £2700 oem from Scania)

Ok, I have to be brutally honest and say you are not ready to buy a first lorry yet.
You have to do your homework first.
Scania is a good motor. BUT your are just starting out and there are many unknowns ahead of you, especially economy related ones. And then of course there are things related with equipment (namely unit).
Scania assuming you are buying comes in P, G, R, T ranges.
P - local delivery, normally 4x2 units
G - short haul, day work units
R - mostly used for long distance, night away work.
T - bullnose units (rare and you would not buy one, due to price and availability).
Then there is the power variability.
Most fleet spec vehicles are 450hp, more rare are the 490hp ones. Then you have the V8's 500+ hp.
The one you are being offered is most likely to be a 450 with two pedal opticruise gearbox.
Once you find out more spec on the vehicles then you can get more information on them.
Also are you leasing it, or buying it outright? Are you sure you will get finance if you are buying a unit without any trading history.
And of course the most important thing - what type of work will you carry out and where in the country?

I run a R480 Highline twin steer mid lift, 3 pedal Opticruise with a retarder. For me it's the ideal vehicle, big enough to live in all week, not too heavy. It's a Euro 4 with 600k km on it, so no add blue, returning @8mpg, most of the time running at max wt pulling a bulker or curtainsider. Serviced by Scania. That may cost me a bit more but I get national coverage and when I have had a problem they've been out v quickly. But it's all a matter of choice, what we want, what we like.

Just dont go with a 480
The turbochargers have changing geometry and will cost a small fortune to replace. If going for an older unit 420 or 500 v8.
I'm talking from experience of running such vehicles with 1m km+

Have you got a reliable driver that will do the work?
If so, I would not bother with a new unit, especially if running containers. As Mr. Hill pointed out an older vehicle (if you can find a good one that is) will cost you less to buy initially (until you understand what is what) and on top of that there will be less to go wrong with it.
A good Euro 4 vehicle would be an ideal option. No pointless adblue sensors (for a daf xf 105 2008 £350 a pop from DAF OEM), no DPF filters, and a very basic fuel injection system if you get a PDE engine.
