Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
So today I had my first interview since passing my class 1 test just over a week ago.
Even though they advertised the job at £15-£18 per hour in the interview they told me the hourly rate was £12.05. The interviewer said "that's the best rate you'll find as a new driver in the Exeter area".
Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
And is £12.05 a fair wage for a new driver?
P.s. I'm probably not going to accept the offer because I was hoping for a little more even if that may be wishful thinking.

Not even sure they can legally do that! Know your worth. Walk!
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
No. Definitely not. They trying it on
Should out the company.
Tbh no reason a new driver should get less
Unless it's specialised like heavy plant, tanker etc...
Shouldn't be classified as anything other than another driver

Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
You can do much better on agency in that area!
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
If it was say the £12.05 ph for a few weeks while training etc then ok
But to advertise at 1 rate and try palm off another with no explanation as to why and for how long is pretty pathetic
If you think you can do better then go for it don’t undersell yourself

Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
I had the same Rolyon, I was offered class 1 at £12ph between 1800-2100 then £13.40 from 21:00-03:30 then back to £12 until 6am.
I went back to class 2 as the wages were good with Mon-Fri.
If you’re looking for a decent paid job with decent hours then give Booker Exeter a look online mate, they’re recruiting at the moment

Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?

Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Bad advertising may be let trading standards have a look at them
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
That's bad, could understand it if budding up and maybe 1st few months whilst your experience grows but no need to be so different for an unknown period. I have 6 months experience in Suffolk. Company put me thru test etc am on reasonable money, pretty sure only the 20 year people are on substantially more.
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
If you liked the job, company vehicles set up etc Otherwise then show them you are a reasonable guy. Say £15 to £18 was advertised & whilst you appreciate you wouldn't normally be offered £18 in first 2 years. You would only contemplate anything under £15 for the period of induction, buddying up etc then maybe phased increase to the £15 etc.
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Tell him too 'JOG ON" your worth more than £12.05
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Cheeky bastards, never settle for less, you're doing the exact same job as the guy with 10 years on his licence.
Red flag anyways, I'd stay right away from that firm.

Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Bit pf an insult really considering how much your license has cost you.
Although I feel like they take advantage take of new class 1 drivers.
I'm currently looking for a job but struggling to get anywhere with finding a job and getting an interview.

If they advertise it at 15-18 they should honour it,
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Seems to be the norm in this profession it's bollocks, advertise one rate and offer less, say oh yeah it's x pounds per year but forget to mention that's 60 hours a week on nights and weekends, takes the piss to be honest
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?

Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
As a new driver you're doing much the same work as an experienced one. In this industry experience is just a useful luxury to those whom have it.
£12 is poor unless supported by overtime rates to bring it up to that 15-18

Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Sign up with an agency for better pay
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Yes perfectly fair. As you are a newbie or new pass and don't have experience it will cost the haulage company at least £7000/£8000 to insure you.
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
I am no apprentice. I am a retired HGV1 Driver. Through I'll health. Fed up hearing about the what to be hgv drivers and doing there HGV1 license through the government boot camp scheme. All they see is the £££££signs. They don't have the experience. They expect just to walk straight into jobs. Absolutely crazy. The government reduced the age you can do a hgv from 21 to 18. A 18 year old with absolutely no road sense behind the wheel of a 44 ton truck and trailer. Absolutely crazy.
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?

I've only had my licence 27yrs, but you don't learn this job until your doing it, a driving test doesn't make you a Lorry driver.
Most younger people just aren't willing to put in the hours this job requires.
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Sorry Romew miss read your post. You are right because you have passed a test doesn't mean you are a HGV1 Driver. The learning curve starts once you pass. As you said they just don't want to put the hours in. It is absolutely crazy a 18 year old behind the wheel of a 44 ton truck and trailer. Look at the number of accidents. I watched one on Facebook earlier tonight a car transporter hit a low bridge and ripped two vans off!!!!.romew wrote: ↑Tue Sep 20, 2022 7:27 amI meant the person that made the post, not you.elmiter wrote: ↑Tue Sep 20, 2022 7:26 amI am no apprentice. Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
no they do block insurance any driver who works for that company and £12.05 is taking the P you are better than that
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
He is a newbie driver. With no experience. The simple answer if you understand it which you don't is it will cost anything from £7000 /£8000. One accident and the insurance company will refuse to insure the driver. You are out a job. I was earning the wages that driver's get know in 2004.
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Funny story this is! Just out of curiosity, I've phoned quite a few job adverts, all offering big money! Always get told sorry that jobs gone, but we have some £13/hour!!! Been driving artics for over 25 years!! It's all bollocks!
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
I passed my class 1 end of March and started a class 2 job £15 per hour for 40 hours and £20 an hour over 40 hours… It’s heavy graft but well worth it and decent wage for a class 2
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
A lot of companies where I am are paying between £10-13 an hr, factories are paying more!
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Experience is the key there isn't much companies that going to take you on and pay you £15 - £18 and you never done it before... as a new driver you will struggle because some of these places is in housing estates and all sorts if you hit a car then they got to cover it as a new driver we got yo start from some where after 6 months say you been offered £16 per hour doing the similar thing then over time you can get it up as you proof that you can do the job...
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Doesn’t matter if it’s your first job, or you’ve been doing it 35 years you do the same thing, you know how to do the basics, you have the same money, so no I don’t think that’s right, plus I’d they ain’t going pay what they’re saying they’re paying then it sounds like it’s another not good story
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Know how much you are worth and tell them to do one
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
12.05 for Class 1 is total pxxx take. You can find van jobs for that rate and plenty Class 2 jobs starting from 14£.
15£ is lowest I would accept as new class 1 driver.

Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
it’s all about gaining your experience 3-6 Month . if you have too take 12 13£ An hour . then do it And then you can go and get your £18-20 an hour
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
I called one company, it was advertising 45k- 50k a year.
Asked what the hourly rate was. 12.00 I was already on 13.57 at the time
For sleeping out and dealing with all the traffic and everything else that comes with tramping. No ta.
Get 14.00 an hour now class 2 and am home every night.
Oh and when I pulled him on the advertised ,he coyly said well that is potential earnings you know if you max your hours and work Saturday or Sunday most of the time.
As a side note,I drove buses in Manchester for 6 years and my ex collegues are on nearly £14.00. so in conclusion putting ourselves through nearly 4k to get a license ,time, effort added ect is a piss take for the industry and no wonder so many left to go and drive buses all them years ago.

I passed in May and work for Aldi. 10hr days, 15ph. Cant complain.
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Take the job and keep looking for a better one
You will be gaining experience while your looking
Or go on agency's and take anything they give you. That way you will get a wide spread of experience

As inexperienced driver it is good rate, for a driver with no experience. It will get better
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
I passed 2 months ago started where I am now a month ago started me on 15 ph for first month then on 16ph then up to 17.50 after probation which I think is rather good tbh
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Take it build your experience then you can choose the company and how much you get paid
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
They are taking the risk on a new driver who has only passed test so cannot really drive the truck and will bend the truck in first year take the job go learn to drive the truck sure they will help you learn to drive it.
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
I'm at a company now through agency not bad I thought then I seen what I'd be on for full time with them class 1 nights 50 hour week 29k !!! company's are starting to rip the pis again
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
It’s down to experience, you put the graft in then you reap the rewards.
Re: Has this happened to anyone else where the actual wage is much lower than advertised?
Nah don't accept that - the advertised rate is what you should get. When I passed I said I wouldn't work for less than £15ph or it wasn't worth the expense of getting my licence.
