Modern trucks have autos, teach a modern driver how to use a splitter box and they'll be able to. You old boys aren't some sort of wizards with mad skills that can't be learnt by anyone born after 1978 ffs.

modern truck have auto gearboxes because a manual gearbox is extra money now days and a Eaton twin splitter gearbox was great when it worked right but if you missed a gear or got stopped you had to stop and start again

To be honest I’ve been driving 30 years and I wouldn’t have a clue I was lucky enough to drive scania’s and as for tying a dolly knot I’ve no chance only just leant to Ty my shoe laces.

It’s the same old thing in every industry. Coming from a farming and fabrication background you hear it all the time. The old boys that drove what are now classic tractors (County, Ford, 40, 55, 10 series John Deeres) rave about them purring away all day, but give me a CVT (basically an automatic) any day of the week. I like to go home in the evening not feeling like I’ve been through ten rounds with Mike Tyson, while Piers Morgan is shouting down my ear. Like wise, modern welders and technology make the job so much easier than a clapped out old Oxford oil cooled. Productivity in every sector has gone up, taking the skill out of the operators hands, by letting the machine do the graft. The whole, drivers aren’t the same as they used to be is bullsh*t and just an easy way for those that want to live in the past demean the younger generation. Put any young lad on any machine, if he’s keen enough he’ll learn it and be just as good as the dinosaurs who enjoy an Eaton splitter

I bet you old boys wouldn't have a clue how to drive this old bad boy either... from 1970 something. My father used to have 1 and it was exhausting just to watch him change gears. Its not young drivers fault that they don’t know, they’re born into the auto box era, I’ve driven most manual boxes and I can say the Volvo I shift beats them all

I would agree your not the first to say it. But I could better an I shift on fuel economy anyway of the week. My frav truck was a old f reg scania when my 2 year old daf broke down they bought me that our to finish the rub and loved it I asked to keep it but cost to much in fuel

Got nothing to do with modern drivers, it’s modern manufacturers not putting them in trucks any more. Drivers that used these would have needed the same time to get used to them as a modern driver would.

I drove a twin splitter took a bit of getting used to but was good once I was familiar with it!
