Think we dodged a bullet this week. Thought the chancellor would impose the fuel duty levy they'd delayed last year.

The amount off bullets industry took they thought leave the zombie to heal and double size bullet for next year.

fuel card providers charge every single one of their customers differently
They have a “tier” system they work on and the higher tier they can get you on the more your contact as your supplier makes in commission

its called *risk* and if you are what they deem a risk, you are going to get your pants pulled down, volume also comes into it and I'd imagine that being a well run business might just come into it as well....My best price for next week is 114.65 🕵

not really anything to do with risk mate I used to have involvement with one the big card providers it’s all about reducing the margin between discounted price and pump price. The closer your sales advisor gets to to pump price the more they earn in commissionSimoon wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 1:34 pmits called *risk* and if you are what they deem a risk, you are going to get your pants pulled down, volume also comes into it and I'd imagine that being a well run business might just come into it as well....My best price for next week is 114.65 🕵

they don't deal with divvy's, that`s the *risk* element....I used to use a professional fuel buyer a few years ago when we were buying 30k a week along with a group of other operators in our area, and his mantra was always *risk*, you have got to be a well run operation to get the best prices, that`s my take on it, and after 45 years in this game, I`ve managed to keep the card sharks and their puppet masters quiet, as I`ve never let them down with paymentsSandon wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 1:35 pmnot really anything to do with risk mate I used to have involvement with one the big card providers it’s all about reducing the margin between discounted price and pump price. yeah they do a risk assessment on credit worthiness etc before signing up a new client however once on their books they use a tier system so for example say the *best price* for the week is 8p below pump price they will start you on tier 12 which is a further 1.2p for example under the *best price* to entice you to use the card moreSimoon wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 1:36 pmthey don't deal with divvy's, that`s the *risk* element....I used to use a professional fuel buyer a few years ago when we were buying 30k a week along with a group of other operators in our area, and his mantra was always *risk*, you have got to be a well run operation to get the best prices, that`s my take on it, and after 45 years in this game, I`ve managed to keep the card sharks and their puppet masters quiet, as I`ve never let them down with paymentsSandon wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 1:35 pmnot really anything to do with risk mate I used to have involvement with one the big card providers it’s all about reducing the margin between discounted price and pump price. As the “trust” is built up and the customer doesn’t monitor and scrutinise as much after weeks/months they move you down the tiers and narrow the gap between your price and pump price
And contrary to the belief the more fuel you use the cheaper you get it, the fuel card companies tend to give cheaper prices to those who use less as they most likely will monitor their spend/use more

TBF, i think I've got a decent set of suppliers ATM, we carry 10 cards and play them off each other, some get a bit mardy if they don`t get a look in, but it keeps them on their toes [IMO].....The sharks that rely on you being a bit dipsy are consigned to the bin, but you have to be careful with them for sure, your excellent explanation needs to be understood by anyone coming into this industry, they are not your friends and need to be kept at arms lengthSandon wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 1:37 pmyeah they do a risk assessment on credit worthiness etc before signing up a new client however once on their books they use a tier system so for example say the *best price* for the week is 8p below pump price they will start you on tier 12 which is a further 1.2p for example under the *best price* to entice you to use the card moreSimoon wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 1:36 pmthey don't deal with divvy's, that`s the *risk* element....I used to use a professional fuel buyer a few years ago when we were buying 30k a week along with a group of other operators in our area, and his mantra was always *risk*, you have got to be a well run operation to get the best prices, that`s my take on it, and after 45 years in this game, I`ve managed to keep the card sharks and their puppet masters quiet, as I`ve never let them down with paymentsSandon wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 1:35 pm

also need to be wise to them giving prices excluding vat aswell as that’s another tactic used by them to lure in the less savvySimoon wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 1:38 pmTBF, i think I've got a decent set of suppliers ATM, we carry 10 cards and play them off each other, some get a bit mardy if they don`t get a look in, but it keeps them on their toes [IMO].....The sharks that rely on you being a bit dipsy are consigned to the bin, but you have to be careful with them for sure, your excellent explanation needs to be understood by anyone coming into this industry, they are not your friends and need to be kept at arms lengthSandon wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 1:37 pmyeah they do a risk assessment on credit worthiness etc before signing up a new client however once on their books they use a tier system so for example say the *best price* for the week is 8p below pump price they will start you on tier 12 which is a further 1.2p for example under the *best price* to entice you to use the card moreSimoon wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 1:36 pm

One girl who I won’t name as she got removed from position when customers tried to do her for fraud (recorded calls) made thousands in commission by using the not including vat tactic
