Hi, a new operator raised a query this morning. On a Standard National licence, are 7.5T vehicles exempt from tachograph rules below a certain distance travelled or radius from base? TIA.

Vehicles or combinations of vehicles with a maximum permissible mass not exceeding 7.5 tonnes used for the non-commercial carriage of goods
This would include the non-commercial carriage of any goods, such as a person driving a vehicle for their own personal use, for example, to move house or to transport goods as part of a leisure pursuit (for example, horses, rally cars or bikes).
Non-commercial carriage is defined as any carriage by road, other than carriage for hire or reward or on own account, for which no direct or indirect remuneration is received and which does not directly or indirectly generate any income for the driver of the vehicle or for others and which is not linked to professional or commercial activity.

What Dawn and Ian have stated is correct but remember if that vehicle is listed on the O licence then the driver will be required to use a tachograph and record their activities on a driver card.
If you want to use the vehicle for private use, I suggest you remove the vehicle from the O licence and make sure you have the tachograph set to OOS.
Keep a record of the vehicles activities in case you are ever asked by the DVSA to produce records for the vehicle and the periods of OOS driving 👍

If you are running under an exemption, make sure each driver is given a copy of the exemption in writing to carry. Nothing worse than DVSA pulling the vehicle and the driver doesn't know the exemption or gets it completely wrong, it will lead to FUE for the operator.
