Experienced drivers with a passion for the job is not what big companies and governments want. What they want is the cheapest labour possible no matter what the cons are. The industry is in decline and past the point of no return. Just look at all of the east European slave traders that dominate the market now recruiting from the 3rd world this is what the shareholders and powers that be want and they’re holding all the cards.
There are company owners like myself that don’t subscribe that ethos but unfortunately these days we are too few and too small this job is all about survival now for the people who have passion for the job because in a few decades time there will be no place for us at all once we’ve been replaced by the 3rd world recruits.

Some people in the Uk having a degree and masters are earning below £30.000 a year. Like in hospitality.
So why would a wheel assistant will have to earn much more

Sadly I fear that's actually not enough given the responsibility or compensation for the isolation and anti social hours of work

Overall the job is easy that's why you can work 65 / 70 hours per week, yes if you are on £15 ph you can earn 45 to 50k per year, but you are hardly at home, your health suffers and you only have weekends to do anything, before you know it your kids have grown up and you've seen none of it, we are our own worst enemies we just lay down and let companies walk all over us.
