Hi, looking for some advice please.
Doing some research into setting up and running my own truck, made some inquiries with Goldstar doing containers, just wondering has anybody had any experience with them? Liked the sound of it as it is weekly payments so that would help initially with covering costs etc.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

I must say Goldstar is not ideal to sub to, we used to work with them and pull their trailer, survived only 2 weeks, when everything is fine everywhere is OK but it matters that whoever you are going to work for will care that you earn enough to make it worth it, i.e. with big boys as goldstar you will just be a number 9999, for example we been asked to do a changeover at one of their clients, when driver got there it turned out that trailer we need to change to is not empty yet and will only be empty next day, we been asked to wait but declined to do so as it made no sense at all, driver was at nearly fresh day and they were not going to pay any extra for just wasting whole day away..

yeah they didn't look fantastic when I made the inquiry they offered £1.38 a mile, they did mention they had a minimum payment every week, like I said just looking for some information from people who have been there and done it with them. I've tried emailing loads of company's but even getting a reply seems to be difficult at the moment!

also mention the fuel costs and wages( yes wages. Profit is profit wages is wages) and then tell the new starters what's left.

i made £4640 last week. But when you take 800 in vat and 800 in diesel and @800 i would normally take in wages and another 2-300 in insurance, and other costs....

You need a customer who you tell what the rates are, not the other way around, good luck, you will be better off just being a driver where you are now

Watch out and make sure you check that trailer has MOT and you have a copy of last PMI and that it is within the required weeks for inspection. My operator could not get pmi evidence

when you buy/rent/acquire a trailer you should have your own “first use” PMI and brake test done on it, before you start to use it. The previous owners schedule is THEIR schedule, not yours!

when you work for gold star you pull their trailers and can can change 4 times a day. I am fully aware that all vehicles bought or rented require a first use inspection but with Goldstar you only tow them. Hence the issues

It’s just clicked with what you’re saying 💡! I was referring to trailers in general, not just using goldstar ones 👍🏻 I’ve done traction for a few firms and they’ve never offered a PMI sheet for any of their trailers, tho to be honest I’ve never asked?! Like you said, when you’re pulling 3 or 4 different trailers in a day, are they to be expected to send paperwork for each one?

every operator should ask them for a copy of the signed inspection schedule agreement it’s your responsibility.
If they refuse jog on it’s a sign of what they are like

Almost everyone will try and tuck you up. You don’t get days off. The phone never stops ringing and you have a whole new world of problems and things to worry about that you didn’t even know existed 😂. Factoring companies can help with cash flow, be very very careful who you work for, do your research, and don’t ever sell yourself short!

I would try to find your own work direct, there are companies out there looking for trucks, pick up the phone and start calling around.

All the container work is the same no money You will get paid from Goldstar more than can be said for a lot that pay a better rate I work for Macintyre sister company and work from a railhead in land do two locals a day much better than running out of ports

I put one on containers at the start of the year. Took it off not long after. Our main issue was not necessarily the 2-3hour wait to tip or the shit milage rate but both those combined with a potential 2-3 hrs at the port to get box off and anther on again. If they send you to Elderpoint then your day is funked. If you got the desire to do it then go for it but keep your eyes open and you never know what doors may open once you are operational. Good luck.
