Hello guys, I have a question. What is it with DVSA?
Ok so tyres should not be over 10 years old I fully agree but I send in a 2020 Tipper and it gets an advisory for the rear tyres not being able to see the date stamp as it is on the inside. The rear tyres are not even under the new law it’s the fronts as I am sure you are all aware. I have to get a fitter to turn them and then retorque when there’s no need for this added risk. Thank!

Probably a KPI box to fill.

It’s just an advisory, just leave it and when you get new tyres fitted address the issue then
Re: Hello guys, I have a question. What is it with DVSA? Thanks!
it’s not, had 2 advisories this week for it as the inside rear tyres can’t be seen

If a twin rear axle it's not a failure for 10 year old + tyres, single wheel axles = failure

Read the maintaining road worthiness manual. All tyre manufacture date code must be legible on all tyres fitted on a HGV. Page62, section 5.2.

nowhere there does it say it’s a failure or am I missing something, it does say the date must be legible however if it can’t be seen the tester doesn’t know if it’s legible
Re: Hello guys, I have a question. What is it with DVSA? Thanks!
I stand corrected, I just checked the Inspection manual update (whole manual updated/re dated), that I missed (01.02.21). And it’s a minor/advisory on the rear, like you say. .
Usual dvsa manuals being worded in a way it can be taken either way. (Or different rules between Roadworthiness & inspection manuals, like tacho calibrations).
Re: Hello guys, I have a question. What is it with DVSA? Thanks!
even the information section in the 01/21 inspection manual says it must have dates on every tyre and is a deficiency if not, then goes on to say, on twin axles it will be assumed their is a date, so will be a advisory.
Now, I recon this will change in years to come, as I think manufacturers will/should be date stamping both sides soon.

It is a requirement for the manufacturer’s date code to be legible on all tyres fitted to HGVs, trailers over 3.5 tonnes, buses, coaches and minibuses
Also goes on to say it is a advisory on inspection and must be checked by the operator

Just had this discussion on a TM refresher course today others have had same issues and was said that lot of tyres are now directional so can't be turned around like stated its only steer tyres need to be less than 10 year old
Re: Hello guys, I have a question. What is it with DVSA? Thanks!
I agree with you 100% We also had one advised this week for the same reason. A direction tyre on the inside rear that the date cannot be seen on.

They are doing it even if you put a massive arrow with date code here pointing to the location in-between the tyres
They are going back to the days of being idiots and can't use a brain cell for common sense

I had this discussion direct with the DVSA as one of our vehicles was marked as a defect on a twin wheel, date stamp on inside. It should go as an advisory if they cannot see the date stamp and assume it is less than 10 years old. I have email correspondence with them confirming
Re: Hello guys, I have a question. What is it with DVSA? Thanks!
My mate read the tyre information and it's only on front tyres of lorries
Re: Hello guys, I have a question. What is it with DVSA? Thanks!
Front tyres only , I’m aware of all the advisories, it’s a good job advisories not longer effect your OCRS
Re: Hello guys, I have a question. What is it with DVSA? Thanks!
Tyre manufacturers need to stamp the date on both sides of every tyre from now on.
Re: Hello guys, I have a question. What is it with DVSA? Thanks!
I believe that although the 10year expiry is only for front steering axle, the date still needs to be legible on ALL tyres.

All tyres have to have a legible date code on any vehicle over 3500kg.
You normally find the date code on one side and the serial number on the other side so if you have directional tyres then you do have some difficulties to overcome but this can be achieved with a robust tyre management system in place.
Further problems will occur at a roadside stop so you need to be able to demonstrate what you are doing to monitor all tyres and overcome the problems with directional tyres.
The law of 10 years is currently only on the front tyres, it won't be long till that covers the rear as well

2020 tipper should have had 12 month extension on MOT not due until 2022
But fully agree all my trailers with tyres over 10 years had an advisory... why?

Re: Hello guys, I have a question. What is it with DVSA? Thanks!
We have had the same problem and took paperwork from the Gov stating the rear tyres if twin do not come under the ruling and still gave us an advisory
Re: Hello guys, I have a question. What is it with DVSA? Thanks!
Write to the TC explaining what’s happened as it’ll affect your operators score and all the TC is an advisory for a tyre
Re: Hello guys, I have a question. What is it with DVSA? Thanks!
All the info you need is in the MOT testers manual and Guide to maintaining roadworthiness. In any event the person doing the PMI should have recorded it on the pmi sheet.

Fed up with having to tell testers there job at testing stations!
