Maximum journey distance in one day?

Post by JonnyTiger »

Morning all,

I'm a newly employed TM working for a new haulage firm based near Cheltenham. We have a 16T Rigid Curtain-side without a sleeper and was wondering what's the maximum journey distance you would recommend in one day, ensuring that drivers' hours regs are not breached? We're only doing one or two pick ups per day, so not lots of stopping and starting.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Your CPC management course taught you how to work this out. Do you remember the exercise working out how far a truck had travelled at a certain speed or working out what speed it had travelled over a certain time.

let’s be honest, if all journeys were as per the text book the productivity of haulage would double over night.

You should consider the maximum speed of 90kph for your vehicle and the maximum driving time is 10 hours, then reduce the average speed because of traffic and road conditions. Then you can get a rough estimate. This is the reason you should plan your journey.

Plan the day on 9 hour drive then if there's any problems he can use his, no sleeper cab don't plan a 10 hour drive your asking for trouble and drive might have something to say, a driver will look after you if he thinks he getting looked after.

Google the mileage and divide by 50 for miles, 80 for km. will give driving hours for majority motorway.
A roads 40/64.

Doesn’t matter. You’ll never get it right. The roads are daily.

exactly, so if the TM has never been a driver of HGV would they know timings?

it’s got nothing to do with that. You are taught the easy way to work routes. How more simple can it get and with the comments some of my learned friends have made, it gets easier!

You are also taught drivers hours and truck speed limits. Any TM should be able to do this. It is junior stuff.
