same here mate 2nd truck in 2 years. Making a decent wage compared to being an employee, aye a lot more stress but put the work in and the rewards are there 👍

exactly you work for self you line your own pockets now you choose your time off and yeah the stress will always be there comes with every job but you deal with it in your own way you look after your own wagon repairs are minimal some times repairs n some maintenance has to be done but 95% of time its general wear tare 6 weeklys n mots it just makes the world go round and its just another day isn't it

agree to all what you said. Inspections repairs ,tyres etc. Dredded paperwork and filing lol But got Mrs to help me with all that 🙂 bonus she enjoys coming upto my truck at weekends with me ..lol
I been at it 10 month. Had quiet periods but still turned in and managed to get full days graft from it.
Wouldn't mind another tbh but we'll see

It’s hard I’ve been an owner driver for a year now and there’s not much in it if I was thinking sensible I’d be better off selling the unit and trailer and driving for someone but it’s an itch I love to scratch so here it will stay

Depends on where you are and what you have been offered, if it's a quarry contract take it to an accountant/solicitor for their opinion, as others have said quarries are tied up at the moment and could find you are trying to pay for a truck on half a days work. Muckshifft is cut-throat every man and his dog got a grab now and forcing rates down same with road planning running trucks at a loss just to sell the material. Bulker game is ok but good work is scarce with a lot of the big boys running all week on backload rates if you like sitting around for free try getting in on the grain/harvest work. If it's HS2 then the works there but what's the plan after it's finished there will be a lot of people fitting for very little. If it's something you want then have a go it might work well for you and your situation wife might be in a good job or you might have a smallholding or something to supplement the income when it's quiet, or if you're out in the stick's buy a tractor and dump trailer run on cherry no rules and fill your boots.

I was an owner driver for 11 years. Don't do it! They're strangling the rates and have done for years. You're as well or if not better off driving for someone else without the headache!
It also depends what plant or Quarry you're working out of. I'm glad to be out of it. Years ago there was a decent living to made but not now.

Having read most of the comments some of what people say very true there isn’t a lot of money in it but there is money to be made. Get a good start with no serious breakdowns find some good work/payment terms and work hard. I started in 2010 with 1 my 7th one will be on the road in September and all were brand new to me. Would I do it all again now? Probably not with the price fuel/tyres wages. Fuel this week £1.19/ litre when I started 2010 80p big difference and the rates aren’t a lot better!! Best luck pal

I’m sorry I’ve heard enough, anyone who thinks they can make more than money minimum wage running wagons either is very silly or completely and utterly stupid. Fuel price through roof, insurance through roof, decent garage labour rates through roof, finance road tax everything’s getting dearer and haulage rates stay the same
Haulage industry is dead….wake up is it not blatantly obvious to people that government has strangled the road haulage industry to death
All drivers on here complaining they want massive money wages
Wagons not making money to start with especially when you ring up……I’ve had a blow out neck end of £600 out window
I’ve ripped gates off in a customers yard and all rest of the utter cluster fucks drivers doo regularly
But driver still wants £800 plus a week after he’s smashed wagon up and it’s earnt nowt
No ones perfect but wagon games dead
Haulage rates crap
Drivers want daft money
Want a brand new wagon then wreck it
If you think there’s money to be made then you need a cat scan

Had one in mid 90s, found the same, paying out more than got in. Rates needed doubled or trebled just to make it worthwhile, they ain't going to do that.

Mate I looked into is up until 3 weeks ago for both 8 wheelers and artics and my research always drew me back to being a self employed drive contracting like agencies but for myself was less headaches driving other peeps wagons and making seriously decent coin to and there is an abundance of work around if you're willing to put the graft in
