exactly
That's why I laugh when all the comments refer to a set time of 15 or whatever minutes
Company policy and the actual regs are very rarely the same

No legal time is set out but they have what’s called “ best practice” 15 mins seems the norm plus post checks

It takes along as it takes u might have a small box wagon which would take 15 mins or to could have a very complex low loader with several axels and god knows what else which would take about 45 mins to check or longer
Re: Is there a time limit recommended for a daily driver walk around check, we alocate 15 minutes. Does anyone suggest
Time I never find is the issues it’s the drivers spending the time actually looking over the vehicle correctly

Sainsbury's drivers have to do a 45 minute vehicle check.

Anything over 5 minutes is acceptable
It’s a walk round check not a mot

Depends on the vehicle - a 44 tonne wagon and drag with a hiab and moffit is going to take much longer than a 7.5t box van.
Re: Is there a time limit recommended for a daily driver walk around check, we alocate 15 minutes. Does anyone suggest
There is no defined period but 15 minutes is deemed best practice, totally depends on the vehicle, a 90 seater will take longer to check than a 16 seater, sorry I’m talking PSV as that’s my world, but same applies with trucks 7.5 ton will take less time than a 22 ton tipper

this is why we have a policy to do up every seatbelt at the end of the day. That's way any issues with belts can be rectified in the evening rather than before going out the next day.jamesman wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 9:20 pmevery seat belt,AndyAut wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 9:20 pm There is no defined period but 15 minutes is deemed best practice, totally depends on the vehicle, a 90 seater will take longer to check than a 16 seater, sorry I’m talking PSV as that’s my world, but same applies with trucks 7.5 ton will take less time than a 22 ton tipper

problem with that is drivers don't check the full length of the belt for damage and they only ever plug them in and not check the release button (which could be defective!)Markwripe wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 9:21 pmthis is why we have a policy to do up every seatbelt at the end of the day. that's part of the check. They have to do a proper check not just do them upwintt4freen wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 9:22 pmproblem with that is drivers don't check the full length of the belt for damage and they only ever plug them in and not check the release button (which could be defective!)

do they actually do that though? I know a local company where they just do them up and drivers rarely check the full length of webbing... We don't fasten ours up, they just get checked on a morning; all buses on CCTV to monitor and record checks (just in case) but also spot checks to check drivers are actually checking and not just signing the book!Markwripe wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 9:22 pmthat's part of the check. Takes what it takes to do a safe check
Re: Is there a time limit recommended for a daily driver walk around check, we alocate 15 minutes. Does anyone suggest
No legal time just a reasonable amount of time...
Way I see it is.... If you drive the truck day in day out you know what's wrong with it as it develops

I suppose you say you must legally do 30hours walk round every morning regardless....
Ideal world real world and the law does not state a specific time it states a reasonable amount of time... Stick to the facts...

There are not 30 hours in a day.
We have had 2 operators requiring assistance in the last 4 weeks because a driver had not checked their vehicle correctly. Roadside pull, defective tyre, prohibited, fixed penalty notices, followed by site visit, followed by referral to the Office of the Traffic Commissioner.
This creates endless work, potential Public Inquiry, huge cost and why? Because the driver knows his vehicle...clearly not.
Re: Is there a time limit recommended for a daily driver walk around check, we alocate 15 minutes. Does anyone suggest
so it was nothing related to how long they spent doing checks your points aren't valid because the topic is time spent doing....Operain wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 9:26 pmStick to the facts? OK, I will.

The drivers in question are clearly not doing it put cards in go for a brew...
Again not actually giving a toss and doing checks is far different to actually knowing your vehicle and doing your checks

Most trucks are moving most of the day; even if tou drive it everyday, what has the other driver done ... It must be checked properly everytime!

TC's are expecting 'adequate lead time'. Refer to the Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness.

A bog standard walk around check would generally be allocated 15mins. Some vehicles have other equipment to check though. Screen wash top ups quick set up. If it’s regularly more than 30mins then the driver requires training IMO

Also depends on whether the drivers use an app, some ask the driver to take a photo of an obscure light or vehicle corner to ensure they are doing it as they scroll and tick they've done it, it then randomly ask the driver to take a photo of xyz as he does it. Longer but the driver never knows what he's got to take photos of each day

Can take 1 minute or 60 minutes main thing is as long as the driver does it

we often have a single driver check all the fluids of all the buses on a morning then they can start them up to get the air built up, heating on, etc then the individual drivers come in and do their checks, or a fitter if the driver has a tight turnaround on daily rest (rare but it happens!)

DVSA rules are black and white if it’s not written down it’s not enforceable
Re: Is there a time limit recommended for a daily driver walk around check, we alocate 15 minutes. Does anyone suggest
believe me, DVSA and TCs are advising/enforcing things that are not necessarily written down.
Laden brake check at every PMI. Vehicle by vehicle monitoring of ad blue. Not exactly what is in the guidance. Can still be added to undertakings.

The idea of English law is that it was based on customs which go back to the middle ages. Consequently, if something is routinely done then a sharp lawyer could argue that guidelines, loop holes or grey areas in statutory law should be followed. However, it may come down to personal interpretation of the official attending the vehicle!
Re: Is there a time limit recommended for a daily driver walk around check, we alocate 15 minutes. Does anyone suggest
Always vehicle specific depending on equipment mounted or not, trailer pulled or wag and drag etc.

One of the most important things when using the app is to use it properly. In a court last year, a driver was asked if he really could check all the functions inside his cab within 5 seconds!

There is no set time laid out the legislation, just that it should be done once every 24 hours is the only reference to time scale.
I personally walk around every few hours when I am out tipping just to glance over tyres etc. because of the type of work I do.

I once spent 12.5hours doing a daily walk round. Lorry was mint. Didn’t have time to go anywhere after though, because I obviously needed 30mins to do my paperwork and decamp. Boss sacked me. What a tosser. I was only trying to be safe
Re: Is there a time limit recommended for a daily driver walk around check, we alocate 15 minutes. Does anyone suggest
An old vehicle and trailer is going to take longer than a new set up. Take a tramper for example, starts his week with a through check and off he goes. Post checks his vehicle and all is sound, let’s say 15 mins. When he gets up in the morning starts his shift then how long is is checks going to take. Checks lights, tyres and has his vehicle been interfered with, everything else he checked 11 hrs ago and vehicle hasn’t moved. Common sense needs to be applied

It takes as long as it takes to do the check. Question is, if said driver get pulled by DVSA, and asked to demonstrate his checks, can he justify X mins of his check at the start of the shift.

Turn lights, hazards on, walk around check there working , look at tyres and wheel nuts on way round , how does it take more than 2 minutes to do that ?

No time in law and the walk round does not have to be the driver

From the DVSA 27 minute video, at the very end they say it takes as long as it takes. It will depend on the vehicle, drivers knowledge and fitness. Companies like 15 minutes on the tachograph because it looks like it has been checked! Drivers should follow company policy.
