it’s difficult out there for experienced drivers to get jobs currently due to the circumstances plus plenty of firms are going bust for that very reason. With zero experience it’s not gonna be easy to find anything so like others said see if you pass first then take it from there.

ignore the negativity. The ones who think they know it all are just trying to burst your bubble. I got class 1-2 2 years ago. Start with agency a lot of newly passed are welcome. It’s a lot of messing about but you will settle in. Don’t think you’ll like the first job you do, all so different. I’ve settled for class 2 skips it keeps me local, home for lunch etc 50 hours a week Monday to Friday no weekends home by 5. £37.5k a year and better pay than some class 1 jobs in my area. I call it my tonka toy lol. I’m 50 this year always been in transport and just want an easy life now. If your looking for class 1 tramping thats where the money is or ADR. I’ve done bins, recycling, tippers, sweepers, volumetric concrete, curtain side tail lift. Don’t worry about companies for now. Pop to some agencies ask around there to start. Or try aggregate for tippers and bulkers. Good luck with your tuition x

Reason why as the country is flooded with drivers and paying peanuts and for insurance reasons they are looking for 2 years experience and if your paying for your own licence I'd rethink about investing your your money on doing something else I'm not trying to put off I'd im only trying to give you advice no money in it anymore

you get a lot off nobs like him Vlaam might struggle to find full time work at the beginning off the year and being newly passed! If so try agencies it gets you work and experience and it’s a foot in the door for the company’s you are booked for. Good luck

nothing wrong with seeing what opportunities there are before spaffing a load of time and money on training. It would more stupid to not look into the sector before training for it. That's why I didn't train up to be a fletcher, looked into the industry and there aren't that many jobs for feathering arrows nowadays

mine too, literally just f**ked it all off agency’s waste your time and companies either want experience or just never even get back to you. Gd luck get it done if its free but prepare for a struggle finding work you maybe better looking at a lower class to get the experience

It’s not like it was 2 years ago where there were loads of opportunities for new drivers (publicised in the press)
January is always a really rubbish month for haulage and this year it’s worse than ever with the cost of living crisis etc and multiple companies going under.
My advice to you at the moment would be to rely on whatever other job has got you through the past 6 months for a short while until you’ve actually passed then come back and ask the same question again then.
The industry can change so quickly and operators are being more and more ruthless as they are under increasing pressures.
There are still opportunities out there, but it might be some casual work with an agency that gets your foot in the door somewhere.
Good luck on your journey 👌

Good luck, sadly it is a bit of a chicken & egg thing, sign on with as many agencies as possible. When things are busy companies will be less picky, if can get your foot in the door and start working somewhere regular ask them about temp to perm.

really? I passed my class 1 in July last year and I'm already earning £42k for a 4 day week. I generally do less than 48 hours a week. Get paid 12 hours even if I do less, but if I go over, it's overtime. There are decent jobs out there if you look for them

really? I passed my class 1 in July last year and I'm already earning £42k for a 4 day week. I generally do less than 48 hours a week. Get paid 12 hours even if I do less, but if I go over, it's overtime. There are decent jobs out there if you look for them
who do you work for?

best thing I ever did was change career to driving. In under 2 years, I've upped my salary by £12k. All these guys slating the industry are clearly too lazy to go out and find a decent job. Yes there are companies who pay peanuts, but their driver turnover will be sky high. I was working for Swains, their hourly rate was appalling. Stayed long enough to have enough experience to be able to apply for something better. They have a few drivers who have been there years and happy to just muddle on, all the others are just there as a stop gap

over the years I’ve worked security, warehouse, driving all from vans up to class 1 none of those jobs paid anything near Hgv driving. Yea the hourly rate is better in most jobs but warehouse you ain’t gonna earn £40-50k a year. I done class 2 for 6 years and was earning around £38k a year and class 1 I done for a year and was on a wage of £45k for the year. I’ve literally 4 days ago applied for a job 10mins from my house that’s paying £56.5k a year.

you only pay 40% on the portion of salary that's over the threshold

not really if you was on £56k a year you’d be taking home around £3.5k a month. On a wage of £45k a year your on around £2900 a month so your around £600 better off a month

I passed in the autumn and haven't managed to get a job yet, but something will come up eventually. Get your licence and then see what happens. It's a hard slog to get something so don't give up your current job just yet.

Don't. Go and do something where you're wanted and appreciated and well paid with decent working conditions. Plumbing, electricians, plasterers, bricklayers, carpenters. Basically get a trade.

If you get a start at all the wages are going to be terrible and I mean terrible but sadly it’s the only way you will get the experience so you might have to bite the bullet and do the work but if I was you I wouldn’t burn any bridges with the job you are doing now just incase 👍

My advice is concentrate on firstly getting your license understanding the tacho rules.
You will have plenty of time after passing to find a job.
Everyone keeps saying no work but that’s not true. I passed my class 1 and month later I got work with co op. However I do have 5/6 years driving rigids.
Co op Biggleswade take on new passes but you’ll be in rigid for a Little while and then they will train you on artics.
Good luck

Try a few agencies first or back street companies not the bigger firms get the experience and then move on to where you wanna be it’s what I had to do when I first started out 7 years ago 🙂
